Etymology: The taxon name comes from Greek akantha (meaning prickly) and kalyx (meaning buds), which refers to the spines on the floral tubes.

Description: Solitary to slowly clumping

Stem:. Globular to elongate up to 60 cm tall, 15 cm in diameter.

Roots: fibrous. 

Ribs: Numerous 16 to 20 acute; 

Areoles: each areola includes 5 to 10 spikes radial brown more or less dark, usually central pin circle one longer.

Spines: 10 to 20 per areole, dense, thin, long, curved  grayish-pink or grayish-honey-colored.

Flowers: A. spiniflorus flowers range from pink to white (4 cm to 7,5 cm in diameter) appear during late spring and summer, the form “violaciflorus” has lilac flowers. It starts blooming at around 6cm in diameter.

Sun Exposure: Full Sun. Need a very bright exposure, full sun is indispensable to keep plant compact with strong spines.

Soil pH requirements: 6.1 to 7.8. It needs good drainage and very porous substrate. Draining a mixture vermiculite, sand and compost suits him very well.
